Why We Use Shockwave
Some pain and injuries don’t resolve the way we expect them to. Even when patients rest, stretch, or try basic treatments, certain areas stay irritated or painful. This is common with tendon injuries or areas that have been overloaded for a long time.
In those cases, the tissue often isn’t getting enough stimulation or blood flow to fully heal. When that happens, the body may benefit from additional support to restart the healing process. That’s when we consider shockwave therapy.
What Shockwave Therapy Is
Shockwave therapy uses acoustic waves that we apply directly to the affected area. It’s non-invasive and does not involve injections or surgery. The purpose is to stimulate the tissue and help the body restart the healing process where it has slowed down.
Rather than blocking pain signals, shockwave therapy works by encouraging the body to repair the tissue itself. This stimulation can help improve circulation and trigger a biological response that supports recovery.
Conditions We Commonly Use It For
Shockwave therapy is most often used for chronic or stubborn conditions, especially when progress has stalled.
Some of the more common conditions we use it for include:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Achilles tendon pain
- Shoulder conditions, including rotator cuff-related pain
- Chronic muscle tightness or trigger points
- Tendon injuries and overuse injuries
- Areas of long-standing inflammation that haven’t responded well to other care
Not every condition requires shockwave therapy, and not every patient is a good candidate. That decision is based on the exam and how the tissue responds.
How Shockwave Supports Healing
Shockwave works by sending a mechanical signal into the tissue. This signal increases circulation to areas that are slow to heal and stimulates the body’s natural repair response in chronic conditions.
Over time, this stimulation can help reduce sensitivity in tissues that have been irritated for long periods. Most patients do not feel immediate results — improvement typically happens gradually as the tissue begins to respond and remodel.
Combining Shockwave With Advanced Spine Care
Shockwave therapy is often used alongside other treatments that address how the body moves and functions.
In some cases, chronic tendon or muscle pain is influenced by underlying spinal stress or nerve irritation. Our clinic uses both the Accu-Spina IDD Therapy® system and the Chattanooga Spinal Decompression System to gently reduce pressure on spinal discs and nerves. These non-surgical decompression therapies improve circulation around irritated tissues and support proper nerve communication. When used alongside shockwave therapy, decompression helps address contributing spinal issues while shockwave stimulates healing in the affected soft tissues.
How It Fits Into Care
Shockwave therapy is not used on its own. It’s usually combined with chiropractic adjustments, manual therapy, and movement or activity guidance. By addressing both how the body moves and how the tissue heals, we’re aiming for better and longer-lasting results — not just short-term relief.
What Patients Usually Notice
Sessions are short and focused on the problem area. Some discomfort during treatment is normal, especially in sensitive or inflamed tissue, but it’s typically brief. Most patients notice changes over a series of visits rather than after just one session.
Our Approach
We use shockwave therapy when it makes sense for the condition and the patient. Care plans are adjusted based on how the body responds over time.
The goal is to help the body heal more efficiently and allow patients to return to normal movement and daily activities with less discomfort.
Schedule Your Appointment
If chronic tendon pain, plantar fasciitis, or stubborn muscle injuries have not improved with basic care, shockwave therapy may help stimulate the healing process.
